2019 Summer Art Camps

AMoA Summer Art Camps offer in-depth art experiences for area youth. Led by AMoA’s teaching artists, the Museum’s popular summer programs teach kids how to look at, talk about and create art. Young artists explore drawing, painting, mixed media, sculpture and design as they visit the galleries to gather inspiration from exhibited artwork. All art materials are included in the camp fee. Each week-long camp is offered Tuesday - Friday. Enrollment is limited so register early!

*Registration is not complete until tuition is paid in full. A limited number of scholarships are available upon request.

AGES 4-5
ART ADVENTURE
 
$45 ($40.50 for Members) 

This camp is a great introduction to the world of art! Learn about famous artists and art techniques through experimenting with different media. Children will explore line, shape, color, pattern and texture with paint, clay and more!
A 2019 Summer Art Camp T-shirt is included.

Tuesday through Friday from 9:00 to 12 Noon. Each camp features two different artistic themes, a mid-morning snack and a 2019 Summer Art Camp T-shirt. A visit to the Museum’s galleries encourages students to look, ask questions and consider the variety of methods and materials used in the making of art. 

ANIMALS IN ART + DREAMSCAPES  JUNE 4-7

Learn how to draw some of your favorite animals and make pet portraits with a contemporary twist! In this camp we will practice many art elements and principles while creating fun animal art, incorporating some famous examples (Picasso’s Peace Dove and Rousseau’s Tiger) and some from our backyard. Students need to bring a close-up photograph of a favorite pet on the rst day of class. In the multimedia camp Dreamscapes, students will create “dreamy” works of art in the style of such well-known artists as Klee, Chagall and Kandinsky. These artists often created works that were a reflection of their dreams and memories. 

CLAY CREATIONS*+ PAINTBRUSHES AND PAGES  JUNE 11-14

Have a delicious time in this creative clay camp as you learn about American artist Wayne Thiebaud who is best known for his colorful and often humorous depictions of commonplace objects such as pies, cakes and even hot dogs! Students will learn a variety of clay techniques in this yummy to the tummy art camp. Students will also combine children’s literature and a variety of art materials to create fun, illustrative works of art! 

EXPERIMENTAL PAINT + UNDER THE BIG TOP  JUNE 18-21

Not all paintings are made with a brush! Scrape, tape, smoosh, and experiment with fun and different approaches to paint. Then, STEP RIGHT UP! to the whimsical circus, full of dynamic images of drama and wonder. Students will create works of art inspired by the movements and vast array of colors the circus has captivated us with for centuries. 

LOVELY LANDSCAPES + TAKE A CLAY DAY*  JULY 9-12

Study the landscapes of well-known artists such as Monet, Hundertwasser, and Van Gogh while exploring fun art elements including line, texture, pattern and color. Students will create a variety of landscapes, seascapes and cityscapes using pastels, paints and printmaking techniques. If you also love clay, this camp is for you! Get your hands dirty as you explore a variety of hand-building techniques. 

CUT UP/CUT OUT + ONCE UPON A TIME  JULY 16-19

Inspired by the exhibition Cut Up/Cut Out which will be on view during this camp, students will explore the art of paper cutting and collage. Using glue, paint, scissors and paper, students will create captivating works of art. During the multimedia component of the camp, dragons, castles, unicorns, kings and queens will come alive! This camp will heighten the imagination of young artists through the creative and technical exploration of a variety of artistic materials.

*Some of the clay works will be ready to take home right away. Others will be ready for pick up in two weeks, after they are glazed and red.

$70 ($63 for Members)

Tuesday through Friday from 1:30 to 3:30 PM. 

DRAWING  JUNE 11-14

Explore a variety of drawing techniques such as shading, blending and creating 3D forms with pencil, pastel, and charcoal. Great for beginners or those who want to sharpen their skills. 

PAINTING  JUNE 25-28

Students can brush up on their painting skills in this camp that will introduce a variety of materials and techniques. Students will look to the works of famous artists for inspiration. 

WHEEL THROWN POTTERY  JULY 23-26 
Alex Gregory, Instructor
Experience the joy of shaping clay on the potter’s wheel. Demonstrations and hands-on practice will introduce teens to wheel thrown pottery. Due to limited time, staff will glaze finished pieces after the camp and artwork will be ready for pickup in approximately two weeks.
