LOUIS MOELLER

The collection's genre paintings are comments on everyday activity. Typically, the individuals depicted are types of personalities, portrayed in a didactic, romantic, humorous, or reportorial manner. Implicit in these works is the combination of European academic influence and American temperament.

Louis Moeller created a vignette with three figures emphasizing idealism in subject matter, naturalism in style, and manual skill in technique. He includes numerous objects to demonstrate his skill, and he places the elderly gentlemen in the middle ground, localizing the light and merging the background. Moeller was a student at Cooper Union and the National Academy of Design.
