Haiku Poetry

SUBJECT: CREATIVE WRITING - HAIKU

Haiku is a short poem of Japanese origin that creates a mood with the use of concrete images.  It consists of three lines. The first line has 5 syllables, the second line has 7 syllables, and the third has 5 syllables.  Haiku show the essence of a moment where nature is linked to human nature.  It is written about common experiences and natural objects.

OBJECTIVE:

Students will create original poetry by using specific pictures as inspiration.

IMPLEMENTATION

1.  Discuss haiku with students.

2.  Expose students to examples of haiku.

3.  Model a haiku for the students on the board or overhead.

4. Give students the images included with this lesson plan and in groups of 2 or 3, have them write several haiku based on the images.

5. If you have computers in the classroom you may want to have the students create a multimedia presentation in either Powerpoint, MPower, or Hyperstudio to showcase the collection of poetry created by the class.
