OBJECTIVE:

To engage students in active consideration of the effort required in a time consuming enterprise.

MATERIALS:

• See images below

FOCUS: 

Show pictures from familiar fairy tales and ask the students to identify what makes them familiar.

ACTIVITY:

Copy the three images large enough to be displayed at the front of the room. Have students observe the three images and write out the details that they see. It can be something as simple as the way a letter curves or the picture on the side of the manuscript.

CULMINATING PROJECT:

Instruct the students to create a story that incorporates all the details located in the manuscripts. The story should focus on what the person who made the page had to do to create it. For example, did the person have to make his own paints and how long did that take. Once the story is written, students will take turns reading their stories to the class.

CLOSURE:

Discuss what types of projects require a painstaking process such as film making or taking part in a play. Students will discover how art can reflect the mood and spirit of the time in which they are created.
