Born the son of a prominent art, music and literary critic, Guy Pene du Bois was exposed to the arts early in life. He became a critic, writer and painter. Studying with Robert Henri at The New York School of Art, du Bois began his career as one of the New York realists. His early work reflects Henri's influence in the use of dark color and heavy application of pigment. In time du Bois lightened his palette and developed a style suited to his own upbringing. Upper class, privileged, sophisticated persons and people of the theatre became his chosen subjects. |
