Guy Pene du Bois (1884-1958), "Ballet Tryout," 1945, oil on canvas, 29 1/2 x 23 1/2 inches

Born the son of a prominent art, music and literary critic, Guy Pene du Bois was exposed to the arts early in life. He became a critic, writer and painter. Studying with Robert Henri at The New York School of Art, du Bois began his career as one of the New York realists. His early work reflects Henri's influence in the use of dark color and heavy application of pigment. In time du Bois lightened his palette and developed a style suited to his own upbringing. Upper class, privileged, sophisticated persons and people of the theatre became his chosen subjects.

Ballet Tryout illustrates du Bois' style. The figures, while not completely flat, lack volume and the planes of the bodies are clearly defined. The work is studied, carefully composed, with no indication of spontaneous expression. The artist's daughter tells us "The 'seasoned' actress has either been rejected or is doubtful that she will get a part. The slim ballet dancer is looking at herself in a mirror off stage. The two young things against the wall are talking maliciously perhaps, or enviously about the dancer." We see an insider's view of a moment backstage, and a life generally unknown to the public which adds to the intimacy of the work.
