Close Study: Small Works from the Permanent Collection

Close Study: Small Works from the Permanent Collection
January 30 – May 20

The Amarillo Museum of Art’s permanent Collection contains within it a trove of small artworks.  Some of these “gems” have remained in the vaults out of view for some time.  The concurrent exhibition of Cheech Marin’s collection, which includes the traveling exhibition Chicanitas: Small Paintings from the Cheech Marin Collection, provided the opportunity and motivation to bring AMoA’s “small” artworks out into the light.  As the title suggests, they will require close study since every artwork is smaller than 12 x 12 inches.

Artworks like the Tibetan Tsaklis, which average 2 x 2 ½ inches, are masterfully painted in such fine detail that a magnifying lens is required to truly appreciate the details.  Also included in the exhibition will be small Japanese Albumen photographs from the late 19th century.  Other small-scale photographs by contemporary artists such as David Levinthal, Mike and Doug Starn, and Amarillo resident Jim Jordan will also be on view.  Visitors will be able to see small paintings by Jane Wilson and Franz Kline, and prints by Luis Jimenez, Andy Goldsworthy, and Roger Shimomura.  This exhibition is an opportunity to take a closer look at the diverse holdings of small artworks from the AMoA’s permanent collection that pack a big aesthetic punch.
