TITLE: Combining Images and Text to Create Poetry

OBJECTIVE:

Students will be able to create their own poems using selected works of art as either models for combining visuals with writing, or to create a written response or interpretation.

MATERIALS:

  • Colored Paper
  • Magazine Pictures
  • Colored Markers or Pencils
  • Glue and Scissors
  • See images below

IMPLEMENTATION:

1. After viewing the image above, students generate words and phrases that might be used to write "concrete poems," - poems which use words and pictures to create meaning. Notice the upward flow on the word "up" so that the poem expresses a visual representation of the word.

2. Students may use their own drawings or magazine pictures to create their poems.

RELATED ACTIVITIES:

Other types of "formula poems," may be used to express the student's interpretation of an art object. Other pictorial works in the Museum may be used for this.
