New Gifts to the Collection... The Museum has
accepted two new paintings to the Permanent Collection from Mr. David
Van Tosh of Dixon, Illinois. One of the paintings has an interesting
connection to the Museums publications history. In 1979 the Museum
published a poster of Texas, O.K, by Jack Boynton, a prominent artist
in Houston. The poster was one of four works published and sold by the
Museum in cooperation with Mr. Boynton. In 1980 Mr. Van Tosh, then living
in Houston, purchased the original Texas, O.K., a 30" x 22"
watercolor dated 1978/79. Mr. Van Tosh has now gifted the painting to
the Amarillo Museum of Arts Permanent Collection.
A second gift to
the Museum from Van Tosh is a mixed media piece by a Houston artist
named Sorg. The work is entitled Texas Icon #2, and is dated 1977. The
subject matter is a portrait of Candy Barr. Ms. Barr was an "exotic"
personality associated with Jack Rubys Dallas business, the Continental
Club. During the early sixties posters depicting Ms. Barr became an
"icon" in Dallas, hence the artists choice of this subject
as an image for his Texas icon series.

Come Be a Part of the Art Preparations for the celebration of the Amarillo Museum of Art's 30th anniversary in October of this year are underway! As part of the anniversary celebration, the Board of Trustees will embark upon the Be a Part of the Art Campaign to raise funds for positioning the Museum for the enjoyment of future visitors. The Board has committed to raising $5 million for capital improvements and endowment funds for exhibitions, education and collection care and conservation. Capital improvements will include updating gallery lighting, flooring, wall systems, seating and exhibit furniture. The proposed plan will also allow for increased signage and improvements to the visitor reception area. Museum staff will see changes in the Atrium Level offices with renovation to provide more efficient use of office space as well as a more functional area for receiving guests to the Museum. Endowment funds will provide income to bring nationally renowned traveling exhibits to the Amarillo Museum of Art, increase outreach efforts in education to both children and adults, and assure the highest level of care and conservation for pieces in the Museum's permanent collection. Donors to the Campaign may direct their gift to either capital improvements, or any of the endowment areas. A number of giving opportunities are available to donors which allow for their gift to be recognized in perpetuity with a commemorative inscription within the Museum. Each year, more than 80,000 individuals take part in the exhibitions, educational programming and outreach provided by the Museum. Your support of the Museum has made possible the phenomenal educational and viewing opportunities which currently exist. Please Be a Part of the Art to ensure the success of the Anniversary Campaign to provide for the enjoyment of hundreds of thousands more children and adults! For more information, please call the Campaign Office at 372-0600. 30th Anniversary Celebration Planned The Amarillo Museum of Art will celebrate its 30th Anniversary on October 4 and 5. Out and About: Programming for Senior Citizens at AMOA Thanks to funding from the Mary E. Bivins Foundation, the Museum is developing an audience for arts programming with Senior Citizens throughout the region. Park Central Retirement Community residents are the Museum's first partners. A
Continuing Care Retirement Community dedicated to exceptional residential
life, the Park Central Community includes two independent retirement
centers, Park Place Towers and The Continental; Ware Memorial Care Center,
a long-term care facility. The Community is committed to a ministry
of enhancing quality of life for senior adults and their families. At Ware Memorial Care Center, art works made by seniors are being displayed in their "art gallery", a busy hallway for residents. Additional groups from Park Place Towers and The Continental are now participating in the program based on the success of Ware Memorial's visits. Paula Taylor, the
art teacher for this program, says, "It is important that they
remain in touch with culture and art processes that have been a part
of their lives. The act of creating will hopefully remind them that
they are still creative members of the world around them. They also
develop a closer companionship with one another, and a relationship
with the Amarillo Museum of Art." The Museum is grateful to the Mary E. Bivins Foundation for providing both the Museum and seniors of our area with this opportunity for creative thought, expression, and self-discovery. |
