Coreopsis

Robert Onderdonk (1852-1917), Coreopsis, 1881, oil on canvas, 16 x 20 inches

ROBERT ONDERDONK

Robert Onderdonk found inspiration where he lived. He studied at the National Academy of Design. He subsequently studied with William Merritt Chase where he might well have developed the painterly and impressionist technique present in Coreopsis. The foreground in this work is loosely painted yet distinctly individual blossoms melt into a distant field of yellow. This painting, like many others by Onderdonk, was created in the country around the artist's San Antonio home.
