Connoisseurship
These works can perhaps explain the melange of aesthetic tastes in American
art during the turn of the century. Looking at this period, broadly
the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, one should note two
major currents: one that bolstered American art and progressive styles,
and one that flaunted learned excellence through international study
at the European academies.

Boundaries
& Transformations
The power
of the visual imagery of India and Southeast Asia lies in its ability
to capture the human experience and to refine our understanding of constant
differences. It is the tradition of Indic religions to acknowledge opposing
characters and natures within their deities. However, for every boundary,
there is also an equivalent transformation which maintains the spiritual
balance.

The Light of Butterlamps
The Amarillo
Museum of Art in Amarillo, Texas, continues to develop its holdings of
Asian art. Thanks in great part to Mr. V. J. Jordan Jr., an area collector
and community leader, the Museum is able to present this exhibition of
tsakli, miniature devotional paintings from Tibet, its neighboring Buddhist
regions and countries. |
