OBJECTIVE:

Student will utilize a painting(s) to explore the contributions of women to American society.

Students will discover the causes and effects of the changing roles of women in American society.

MATERIALS:

DISCUSSION:

Have students view the O'Keeffe image.

  1. What first catches your eye?  How has the artist accomplished this?
  2. Why does the artist show only one object?
  3. What do you know about Georgia O'Keeffe? (students should write this answer down to compare with their findings after concluding research)

ASSIGNMENTS:

  • Research other images by O'Keeffe in which she used similar techniques.
  • List the occupational choices that women had before 1918.
  • Each student will interview one woman born before 1930  to find the following information:
    1. who were your role models?
    2. what occupations were open to you?  Explain.
  • Report to the class: In what ways was O'Keeffe unique as an artist?
  • Report to the class: In what ways was O'Keeffe unique as a woman artist?
